This part of the tapestry depicts the death of Harold's brothers, Gyrth and leofwin. It would seem that they were not with Harold in his command post further up the slope. It is thought that they may have been on the Saxon right flank that was involved in chasing the Bretons down the hill thinking the whole force was retreating. This militarily unsound command has been blamed on Harold by a number of historians. It may have been given to the flank by either or both of the two brothers who eventually paid for their impetuosity. |
