The day following the death of Edward the Confessor, Harold's coronation took place in Westminster Abbey. The first king to be enthroned there. On his left hand side is Stigand, the excommunicated Archbishop of Canterbury. Despite owing his position to the Godwins, Harold knew that his coronation would not be considered valid if wholly performed by Stigand, he took steps to remedy this, which will be discussed in the last section. |
